The Kaikoura Boating & Fishing Club owns and maintains 3 launching ramps for the benefit of members, and the committee oversees the maintenance of these.
Note – All facilities are for the use of members and families. Access is by key, and only members may use the keys (they may not be loaned to friends).
A reminder that the Ocean View ramp is for experienced boaties only, it is subject to heavy swell action, and vessels can be damaged. All of our facilities are use it at your own risk, and the risk at Ocean View is significantly higher than the other two ramps.
Quake Damage – Uplift
Due to uplift in the November 2016 Earthquake, the Pier ramp is only really usable for most vessels 3 hours either side of high tide. Oaro is currently not usable.
Boats with very shallow draught and oars might be able to get in and out of the Pier at low tide – larger vessels may damage their propellers and hulls.
Take extreme care, assume nothing, check everything.
South Bay Boat Ramp
Our major facility is located at South Bay with the ability for 4 vehicles at a time to launch or retrieve.
There is a 10m wide channel from the center of the ramp straight out to the left edge of the turn rock.
Use caution, and travel slowly.
10m isn’t very wide.
If the tide is low – you do want to be in the middle.
Be aware!
North Side of the Peninsula Boat Ramp
Smaller ramp with much more restricted access and parking opposite the Pier Hotel.
Parking on the North side of Whakatu Quay.
North of Oaro Boat Ramp
Due to uplift in the November 2016 Earthquake, the Oaro ramp is not currently useable.
Information will be updated here when repairs are made to the ramp.
